Defining the Role of Dexmedetomidine in the Prevention of Delirium in the Intensive Care Unit

Dexmedetomidine is a highly selective α 2 agonist used as a sedative agent. It also provides anxiolysis and sympatholysis without significant respiratory compromise or delirium. We conducted a systematic review to examine whether sedation of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) with dexmedetomidine was associated with a lower incidence of delirium as compared to other nondexmedetomidine se...

Benzodiazepine versus nonbenzodiazepine-based sedation for mechanically ventilated, critically ill adults: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized trials.

BACKGROUND Use of dexmedetomidine or propofol rather than a benzodiazepine sedation strategy may improve ICU outcomes. We reviewed randomized trials comparing a benzodiazepine and nonbenzodiazepine regimen in mechanically ventilated adult ICU patients to determine if differences exist between these sedation strategies with respect to ICU length of stay, time on the ventilator, delirium prevalen...

Dexmedetomidine hydrochloride as a long-term sedative

Dexmedetomidine undoubtedly is a useful sedative in the intensive care setting because it has a minimal effect on the respiratory system. Dexmedetomidine infusions lasting more than 24 hours have not been approved since the first approval was acquired in the US in 1999. However, in 2008, dexmedetomidine infusions for prolonged use were approved in Colombia and in the Dominican Republic, and the...

Dexmedetomidine: therapeutic efficacy in adult patients of the intensive care unit

Optimal management of sedation, pain, agitation, and delirium in intensive care unit (ICU) involves systematic and multimodal approaches to provide comfort and safety. As one of the most widely used alpha 2-adrenergic receptor agonists, dexmedetomidine has become more and more popular for sedation and agitation in critically ill adult patients. The sedative, analgesic and opioid-sparing effects...

Clinical application, the use of dexmedetomidine in intensive care sedation

Optimal sedation strategy in the critically ill should achieve effective analgesia, targeted sedation and reduced risk of delirium and agitation. Whilst there is no single agent that can achieve these goals for all patients, a multimodal approach may optimise the use of different agents through multiple modes of action and reduce possible adverse events. This practice review provides an evidenc...
